Mountain slopes, the quality of
the snow and the natural variations of the terrain are some of the
advantages that Ushuaia offers to snowboarders. This discipline, that
year after year adds more followers, presents different modalities.
The necessary equipment consists of boots, straps, bindings and accessories,
depending on the style of practice.
- Free-ride: One of the favorites and probably the most representative
of the sport. Innumerable mountains in Ushuaia have the necessary
elements: powdered snow, deep snow shovels and cornices. The only
thing that is left is to have a go at it and enjoy it.
- Free-carve: For this discipline more rigid and narrow boards
are needed, and generally hard boots, similar to those used for alpine
skiing. In the classic "run snowboard", speed is the protagonist,
and technical knowledge is essential. The Winter Resorts Glaciar Martial
and Cerro Castor are the alternatives where you can practice this
discipline.
- The latter, has an officially approved run by the FIS (International
Ski Federation), where many competitions take place.
- Boarder-cross: is an exclusively
competitive discipline, with a lot of adrenaline that requires an
important technical level. It presents a cocktail of styles, combining
the guidance of free-carve, with the jumping technique, in complex
circuits where several runners move simultaneously, therefore care
must be taken not to be deviated off the track by the opponent.
In the Martial Glacier Recreation Center as well as at the Cerro Castor
Complex, equipment can be rented and lessons are dictated by specialized
instructors.
Every year, Cerro Castor becomes the venue for the Fueguine Snowboard
Championship that includes this style. Some events of the Argentine
Snowboard Championship take place here.
