In addition to the activities that you can enjoy in the city and surrounding areas, Ushuaia offers during winter a number of options to have great fun in the snow.
Due to the insular character of Tierra del Fuego, the winter temperatures here are not as low as in places with the same latitude in the northern hemisphere. The average temperature is 1.6º C between the months of May and August, being July the coldest month of the year, with extreme minimums in the valleys of around -21º C.
The magnificent fueguine geography, with its steep mountains and deep valleys, is ideal for the practice of alpine skiing (on descent), Nordic skiing (on flat terrain) and also cross-skiing (on mixed terrain), besides other numerous and attractive winter sports.
Each year, tourists and residents participate in the various sports and cultural events that take place during the winter.
The most important events are: "Fiesta Nacional de la Noche más Larga" (National Festival of the longest night), musical event that inaugurates the winter season with the arrival of the solstice, the traditional White March. Cross-skiing that connects the different winter centers, congregating whole families to attend or participate in the sports competitions at national and international level; the National Meeting of Snow Sculptures, and astonishing show of art on ice; and the Ushuaia Dog Sled race, a competitive adventure several days long, among the most important.
